The City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Department needs, for contractual and maintenance reasons, to temporarily close eight of its drop-off facilities at close of business 17:30 on Tuesday, March 31. They will re-open on April 14. The Department regrets any inconvenience this may cause.
The facilities that will close are:
- Hout Bay
- Morningstar
- Kommetjie
- Ladies Mile
- Wynberg
- Gordon’s Bay
- Woodstock
- Killarney
The operations at these sites are provided by private contractors and the contracts expire on Tuesday, 31 March.
They are also closing for general maintenance and housekeeping, which will be completed by 14 April.
All these sites with the exception of Hout Bay will reopen for normal operations on Tuesday, 14 April at 07:30. Hout Bay will not be accepting garden refuse when it reopens.
The garden refuse activities at Hout Bay will not continue as the Department has received numerous complaints from the neighbouring community about noise and the dust caused by the chipper at the site.
The Department’s other drop-off sites will still be operational and will accept 1,3 tonne loads (based on carrying capacity of the vehicle/trailer) of garden refuse and builders rubble. They operate 07:30 to 17:30 from Monday to Sunday (including public holidays). They are:
- Atlantis, Dassenberg Road
- Belhar, Adam Tas Road
- De Grendel, 5th Avenue,Parow
- Delft, Fabriek Street,
- Macassar, Kramat Road
- Ravensmead, Industrial Ring Road
- Retreat, 10th Avenue
- Simon’s Town, Main Road
- Tygerdal, Orange Street
- Welgelegen, Akademie Street
Small loads (1,3 tonne) of garden refuse and clean builders rubble (no plastics, wood, tiles, steel) will also be accepted at the following City disposal facilities which are open from Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 18:00:
- Athlone Transfer Station, off Bunga Avenue, Inter-Service Road, Athlone (alongside Athlone Power Station)
- Bellville Landfill Site, off Sacks Circle, (Rotterdam turn-off), Bellville South – closed on public holidays
- Coastal Park Landfill Site, off Baden Powell Drive, Muizenberg
- Vissershok Landfill Site, off N7, Frankdale Road, Vissershok (Opp FFS Refiners)
“The sites are being closed so that we can improve our service to the citizens of Cape Town. We apologise for any inconvenience residents may experience and thank them for their patience and understanding,” said Trevor Carroll, Manager: Collections, in the Solid Waste Management Department.
